Memphis Wilson, a Junior at GOAL Digital Academy and founder of the non-profit organization, Hope in a Box Ohio, addressed the GOAL Digital Board of Directors with an inspiring presentation about his efforts to support vulnerable youth in Ohio on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Memphis founded the 501(c)(3) non-profit, to provide essential resources and foster hope for young adults experiencing homelessness, aging out of foster care, or in need of assistance. Since its inception, the non-profit has grown in scope and impact, recently receiving widespread recognition for its innovative and compassionate approach.
Memphis shared the story behind Hope in a Box, highlighting its mission and ongoing projects. He emphasized the importance of supporting young people in need and detailed the impact his organization has on the community, including distributing boxes filled with necessities such as toiletries, clothing, and encouragement cards.
"I felt nervous and anxious walking up to the podium, but as soon as I started talking, the words came out naturally," Memphis shared. "By the end of the presentation, I was just excited to speak about a passion that I have. My hope in networking within GOAL is to learn how to make Hope in a Box bigger and gain the support needed to expand its impact. Hope in a Box is a great foundation that not enough people know about. The biggest need is proper awareness and support—I truly believe it can grow and help so many, but people just need to hear about it. The second biggest need is funding. Each box costs roughly $200, and if everyone gave what they could, we could distribute so many more boxes to those in need."
The Board commended Memphis for his leadership, passion, and commitment to making a difference.
"Memphis Wilson, with a spark in his eyes, a large heart, and a drive beyond his years, is a testament to the power of youthful ambition," said Debbie Curtis, Board Member of GOAL Digital Academy. "He is not just dreaming big; he is using his past experiences to help others build a better future. Thank you for what you are doing and for who you are. You are an amazing young man!"
In addition to running Hope in a Box Ohio, Memphis is an active and accomplished student. He recently won an award for his photography, is enrolled in College Credit Plus courses, and receives exemplary grades. He is active in his community working at a local hospital, Grady Memorial, and in Guest Relations at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, demonstrating his diverse talents and dedication to personal growth.
Memphis also discussed a recent fundraising effort at GOAL Digital Academy that raised over $400 directly to benefit the organization.
"Memphis exemplifies the very best of what we hope to see in our students—a desire to create positive change and the determination to follow through," said Superintendent of GOAL, Tish Jenkins.
Hope in a Box Ohio continues to expand its reach, helping to empower young people across the state. For more information about Memphis Wilson and his non-profit organization, visit hopeinaboxohio.com.
