Seven staff members from GOAL Digital Academy recently attended the Digital Learning Annual Conference (DLAC) in Atlanta, Georgia from February 24-26, where they engaged with education professionals nationwide to explore innovations in digital learning. DLAC provided a platform for educators to discuss best practices, emerging technologies, and strategies to enhance student success in online and blended learning environments.

Three GOAL Digital Academy staff members, Principal and Director of Curriculum, Dionna Randas; Director of Special Education, Steph Bowers; and English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher, Kelly Watson, had the opportunity to share their expertise by hosting four engaging presentations:

Reading Interventions for the Virtual Student

This session addressed the challenges of identifying and providing targeted, intensive reading interventions in a virtual setting. The team explored strategies for screening, progress monitoring, and delivering small-group interventions to help struggling readers build confidence and re-engage with learning.

Navigating the Science of Reading in the Virtual ELA Classroom

Teaching reading is complex, but teaching it solely online requires innovation. This session explored research-based tools and strategies to break through the challenges of virtual instruction to ensure students receive high-quality, explicit literacy instruction.

Adjusting the GPS: Developing a Virtual Multi-tiered system of supports

In this session, the GOAL team took participants on a journey through the essential components of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in the virtual learning environment. The discussion highlighted the impact of role alignment, fidelity, and capacity-building in fostering student growth and achievement.

The Good the Bad & the Outright Ugly: Supporting the Struggling Reader Virtually

In this interactive “table talk” session, GOAL educators facilitated discussions among participants from across the country, sharing insights, challenges, and celebrations related to the delivery of reading instruction and interventions.

“Having the opportunity to present at DLAC, not just once, but four times, was an incredible experience,” said Steph Bowers, Director of Special Education. “I was extremely proud to be part of the team and to share valuable insights on virtual learning with fellow educators. Each session had a full room of engaged participants eager to learn and exchange ideas. GOAL’s approach to online learning is truly unique, and we look forward to continuing to share our practices and learn from others in the field.”

Beyond presenting, GOAL staff engaged in workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, bringing back fresh ideas and cross-functional strategies to improve learning and engagement for the district.

Key takeaways included:

• Creating Engaging Content Virtually

• Implementing Collaboration Protocols

• Utilizing AI in Education

• Bringing STEAM Events to Virtual Students
